The CXorf61 sequence has first been identified by screening of a cDNA library derived from an allogeneic lung cancer cell line with an HLA-B*157-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) clone established from a lung cancer patient. In a pilot screen of 2 normal tissues by RT-PCR (normal breast not included) testis tissue was the only one to express CXorf61 transcript. Later, two independent approaches, one mining of massive parallel signature sequencing (MPSS) data, the other providing a survey of CTAs in the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) RNA-seq datasets revealed expression of CXorf61 transcripts in the basal-like subtype of breast cancer. The CXorf61 coding gene is located on chromosome Xq22 and consists of 113 amino acids.
